The Sacra Infermeria Hospital was built shortly after the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St John arrived in Malta in 1530 and settled in Vittoriosa (Birgu). It was one of the first buildings erected under Philippe Villiers de L’Isle-Adam, the Grand Master from 1521-1534 and the first in Malta. It remained in use until 1575 when the new hospital in Valletta was completed. In 1652 it was handed over to the Order of Benedictine nuns, who live there today. The church dates from 1672 and was built by the noted and locally born Maltese baroque architect Lorenzo Gafa (1638-1703).
